What "kitchen carpentry" actually means in Singapore

Kitchen carpentry, in the Singapore context, almost always means built-in cabinets and storage — the carcasses, doors, drawers, and integrated features that turn a stripped concrete kitchen into a functional one. It's distinct from:

  • Plumbing and gas work (separate trades, separate licensing)
  • Tiling (a different contractor, often part of the renovation package)
  • Solid surface or quartz tops (typically subcontracted to a slab specialist)
  • Appliances (you choose, contractor installs)

A kitchen carpenter handles everything wood-and-board: base cabinets, wall cabinets, tall pantries, kitchen islands, breakfast counters, integrated dining benches, and any custom shelving or display. In a typical HDB or condo renovation package, kitchen carpentry is the single biggest line item after hacking.

What's included in a typical kitchen carpentry build

For a standard HDB or condo kitchen, expect:

  • Carcass (the structural box) — moisture-resistant plywood. Anything else and you're rolling the dice on Singapore's humidity.
  • Door fronts — laminate, PET, lacquer, or veneer. Laminate is the workhorse; PET is fingerprint-resistant matte; lacquer is premium; veneer is for showpiece kitchens.
  • Hardware — Blum or Hettich soft-close hinges and drawers as standard, not premium. If a quote charges extra for soft-close, push back.
  • Edgebanding — ABS heat-fused as a minimum. Cheap PVC tape will peel within 12 months in a Singapore kitchen.
  • Pull-outs — corner mechanisms (Lemans, Magic Corner), tall pantry pulls, drawer dividers.
  • Lighting — LED strips inside cabinets or under wall units, motion-sensor optional.

Typical Singapore kitchen layouts

Most kitchens we build fall into one of four shapes:

1. Galley (HDB 3-room, 4-room, smaller condos)

Two parallel runs of cabinets along opposite walls. Tight but efficient. Total length usually 5–8 linear feet per side.

2. L-shape (HDB 4-room, 5-room, mid-size condos)

The most common Singapore layout. One run along a wall, second run perpendicular. 8–14 linear feet total. Corner cabinet typically gets a pull-out mechanism.

3. U-shape (larger HDB 5-room, executive maisonettes, condos)

Three sides of cabinets. Maximum storage, two corners to handle. 14–20 linear feet.

4. With island (condo, landed, larger HDB if there's open kitchen)

Wall-mounted galley or L-shape plus a freestanding island. Island doubles as breakfast counter or prep space. Adds 4–8 linear feet to the total.

The shape of your kitchen decides the cost more than the finish. Wall-mounted units are cheaper per linear foot than islands; corners cost extra; tall pantries (above 2.1m) are priced differently from base + wall combinations.

How kitchen carpentry is priced in Singapore

Most Singapore contractors price kitchen carpentry by the linear foot — one foot of cabinet length, top and bottom combined. Variables that move the price up or down:

  • Material upgrade tiers — laminate baseline, PET small step up, lacquer/veneer meaningfully higher.
  • Hardware add-ons — lift-up door mechanisms (Aventos), motorised drawers, internal lighting.
  • Complexity — open-back islands vs. wall-mounted, tall pantries, glass display fronts.
  • Coordination — if your contractor needs to coordinate with hacking, electrical, plumbing, and tiling, that has a project-management cost.

  3. Reputable laminate brand — Lamitak, EDL, Greenlam, Polyrey, Formica.

Beyond those three, the door material is mostly aesthetic preference. Don't overthink it.

Soft-close, pull-outs, and other "premium" features

Most "premium" kitchen features now come standard from a quality Singapore carpenter:

  • Soft-close hinges and drawers — Blum or Hettich, included by default.
  • Pull-out corner units — included if your kitchen has a corner.
  • Drawer organisers — basic dividers usually included; specialty inserts at extra cost.
  • Adjustable shelves — included.
  • LED lighting — extra, but cheap. Worth it.

If a contractor lists any of the first three as "upgrades," they're either using outdated pricing or padding the quote.

  1. Do they fabricate their own carpentry, or outsource? Outsourcing is fine if disclosed; it's a red flag if hidden.
  2. Can they show you finished projects you can visit, not just photos? Photos can be lifted. Real visits aren't.
  3. Do they provide an itemised quote, not a single lump sum? Lump sums hide where the money goes.

Anything significantly faster is a red flag (probably outsourcing or skipping QC). Significantly slower without a clear reason (material shortage, design changes) is also a flag.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing the laminate before the kitchen design is final. The laminate range you fall in love with may not exist by the time you're ready to build. Pick a designer first, materials second.
  • Maximising cabinet depth without thinking about reach. 90cm-deep wall cabinets look like extra storage but you can't use the back half.
  • Putting glass-front cabinets near the cooker. Grease film is real. Solid fronts there, glass elsewhere.
  • Choosing handleless without testing the open-and-close action. Push-to-open mechanisms wear out faster than handles. If you're a "shut the cabinet door with my elbow while carrying groceries" person, handles are better.
  • Saying yes to free design without a paid measurement. Free designs are a sales tool, not a commitment to accuracy. Always get a measured plan before signing.
